Baseball/Softball Officiating

Program Overview

Program designed to prepare officials to step onto the diamond with confidence. 

Six-week course on Saturdays from 9 am to 11 am.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Introduce the fundamentals of umpiring baseball/softball by anchoring them to core concepts in the rulebook. 
  • Addresses the most important definitions, rules, and mechanics students need to take into becoming a baseball/softball umpire.
  • Recognize and define key terms used in the act of playing baseball/softball, like pitching, catching, batting, and base running.
  • Express the ways that games are organized into competition, including balls, strikes, outs, and innings.
  • List the steps and considerations an umpire must take to start a game.
  • Recognize legal and illegal actions by the pitcher in various positions.
  • Differentiate between legal and illegal actions of coaches during a game.
  • List and explain the ways in which a batter can be called out.
  • Describe the positioning and areas of coverage responsibilities for the plate and base umpires.

Football Officiating

Program Overview

Designed to prepare officials to step onto the gridiron with confidence. 

Learning outcomes:

  • Describe the difference between Team A and Team B and the offense and defense
  • Contrast the situations that cause the game clock to restart on the snap with those that cause the game clock to restart on the ready-for-play
  • Determine when an offensive formation is legal or illegal
  • Describe the situations that lead to the scoring of a touchdown
  • Describe when it is legal for a player to hand the ball forward to a teammate
  • Recognize the type of dead-ball actions that would cause the officials to prevent the dead ball from becoming live
